Pet projects: Homebuying becomes a whole new animal

From the type of dwelling to the neighborhood amenities, today’s pets are leaving paw prints all over the new homeownership landscape. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 50% of all households have at least one pet, including two-thirds (66%) of homeowners.

The influence of pets on homebuying decisions has evolved beyond mere considerations of space and amenities. It has become a multifaceted aspect that touches on community, design, lifestyle, and even environmental consciousness.

Choosing to buy a home as a pet owner is a decision that goes beyond mere convenience – it is an investment in the well-being and happiness of your furry friends.

America's pets are truly part of the family. And they are big business; Owners spent more than $130 billion on pets in 202l.

Studies show most pet owners look for adequate green spaces and nearby pet services when considering where to live. Some are even more choosy. In a recent survey, nearly 20% of home shoppers said they would not even consider buying a home without parks, walking trails, and nearby vet care.

This pet stewardship often dovetails with a passion for the environment. Dog parks, ecology and pet-friendly events confirm the owner’s choices and strengthen neighborhood ties, building a stronger sense of community.

Pets affect housing types as well. Spacious yards and fenced-in areas are highly sought after, allowing secure spaces for furry friends to roam. Even some condo and apartment complexes are adapting, incorporating pet-friendly facilities like dog runs and grooming stations.

An oft-underappreciated factor is social media presence. Influencers who place content of picturesque locales and homes in aesthetically pleasing and pet-friendly spaces are more likely to attract attention, possibly influencing potential buyers if you decide to sell.

Pet owners value freedom. When you own your home, you have the freedom to customize the space according to your pet's needs. Only about 50% of landlords allow pets, and even those generally come with restrictions.

From creating a cozy nook for them to installing pet-friendly flooring, the ability to personalize is a growing consideration. Unlike rental properties, homeownership provides you with control over your living space, offering stability and predictability for you and your pets.

As the bond between humans and their pets continues to strengthen, our furry friends play an increasingly significant role in shaping the places we call home.
